Choosing the right carpet

Different carpets perform at different levels, so start with a few practical questions. How much foot traffic will the room get? Is it a bedroom, a busy hallway or a holiday rental? Do you have children or pets? Do you want a soft plush pile or a hard-wearing textured loop?

The Carpet Institute of Australia's Australian Carpet Classification Scheme (ACCS) tests and grades carpets for durability. You'll find the grading on the back of every sample in our showroom, which makes comparing ranges easy.

Carpet fibres explained

The fibre you choose affects how a carpet looks, feels, wears, resists stains and what it costs. Density and pile weight matter too. These are the main fibres you'll find in our Rosebud showroom.

Nylon: the most widely used carpet fibre in the world. Nylon resists abrasion, recovers well from crushing and can be treated to resist soiling and staining, so it performs well in high-traffic family homes.

Solution dyed nylon: the colour is added while the fibre is made, so it runs right through the yarn rather than sitting on the surface. It is highly fade resistant, ideal for sunny Peninsula rooms, and can be cleaned with stronger products without losing colour.

Econyl® regenerated nylon: 100% recycled nylon made from waste such as old carpets, fabric offcuts and fishing nets, and recyclable again at the end of its life without losing quality. Our Econyl® ranges come in soft twist piles, luxurious soft-touch piles and modern textured loops in on-trend colours.

Exclusive range Econyl® Origins, Source, Awaken, Inception, Provenance, Genesis, Frontier and Expanse are only available from your local Carpet Court store.

Polypropylene: solution dyed for excellent stain resistance and colour fastness. It doesn't bounce back from crushing quite like nylon, but in a dense loop pile it wears very well and is great value for rentals and rumpus rooms.

Wool: the classic natural fibre. Wool carpet is soft, insulating, cleans up well and ages gracefully. Most carpet wool comes from New Zealand, England and Scotland, where the cooler climate produces the coarser, more resilient fleece that carpet needs.

Polyester: a synthetic fibre with excellent stain and fade resistance at a competitive price, often made from recycled materials.

Blends: combinations such as 80% wool / 20% nylon give you the softness of wool with the added strength of nylon.

Carpet colours and styles

Colour sets the mood of a room. Blues and greens feel cool and calm, light tones make a space feel larger, and darker shades make a room feel cosy. Textured loops hide footprints and suit busy areas, while plush and twist piles give bedrooms and living rooms that soft, luxurious feel. Take a few samples home from the showroom and see them in your own light before you decide.
